John,
Wow! Yesterday was the first session of our 2023 Mama Lila Cabbil Youth Civic Engagement Fellowship where we train young people on the skills to be effective organizers and seek to stop injustices around them.
Their energy and enthusiasm to positively impact their communities and fight for everything from voting rights to environmental justice is infectious. Young people represent the future, not just of the progressive movement, but of our country. And that’s exactly why we’re organizing year-round, to mobilize young people and ensure they have the tools they need to lead―NOW.
Here’s some information about the Fellows who are part of 2023’s cohort:
-
Fellows are serving on youth councils to promote youth education, community involvement, and civic interaction.
-
Some Fellows are serving as student representatives on their local school boards.
-
Some are fighting for environmental justice, including serving on Michigan's Clean Air Youth Council or becoming water activists, like the namesake of our fellowship program: Mama Lila Cabbil.
Because we provide each youth fellowship participant with a $1,000 stipend, we need your help to fully fund this year’s program. Pitch in $5 today to my Rooted in Community Leadership PAC to fund the 2023 youth fellowship and invest in the next generation of leaders.

John,
How do we overcome the injustices in our community? The key is empowering young voters.
Today is the first day of our second Mama Lila Cabbil Youth Civic Engagement Fellowship where we train young people in and around Detroit, ages 14 - 24 on the skills to be effective organizers on a range of issues impacting our communities. Inspiring young people to take on injustices is what Lila taught me as a community organizer.
After hearing from so many incredible applicants who are making an impact in their communities, we decided to expand the program to include more participants. And, since we provide each participant with a $1,000 stipend, we need your help to fully fund the program.

While young people turned out in 2018 and 2020 to oppose Donald Trump’s hate and bigotry, and again in 2022 to fight for our rights―including abortion rights―organizing of young voters didn’t happen overnight. It’s taken a multi-year, year-round organizing strategy to train and mobilize young people.
That’s exactly why we launched the Mama Lila Cabbil Youth Civic Engagement Fellowship where participants will have 32 hours of instruction on the social justice issues affecting their communities and 32 hours of field work with grassroots organizations that are fighting for justice, plus they’ll receive a $1,000 stipend.
Past participants have had an average age of just 18 years old with 93% identifying as BIPOC and 79% identifying as women and girls. This younger generation is the most diverse of any generation in U.S. history.
Younger voters are concerned about the climate crisis, workers’ rights, college affordability, access to clean water, housing, LGBTQ+ rights, immigrant rights, abortion rights, and racial and social justice. In order to continue to advance our shared agenda, we must continue to invest in youth leadership.
