Dear John,

This week, we shone a light on antisemitism in Edmonton, celebrated an Israeli icon, and continued to advocate on matters of importance to Canada's Jewish community.

The CIJA Team

In 2022, the Jewish Federation of Edmonton unveiled Shine a Light on Antisemitism, a mosaic created by the Jewish Federation of Edmonton in partnership with Lewis Lavoie that was designed to start conversations about antisemitism.

Members of the Edmonton Jewish community were asked to express how they have been impacted by antisemitism by painting words or an image on a two-by-four inch tile, which were assembled into a mosaic by Edmonton-area artist Lewis Lavoie. It has been exhibited in several at locations across the city, including, this week <[link removed]>, at the theatre hosting a cross-Canada touring production of Broadway’s Fiddler on the Roof.

The art project also includes a virtual exhibit <[link removed]>, where you can hear community members speak about their experience with antisemitism and how it influenced their artwork.

The mosaic project was funded by Jewish Federations of North America's annual Shine a Light on Antisemitism awareness campaign.

“Inspired by her Yemeni-Jewish ancestry, Haza combined traditional vocal conventions with modern technique to create something that felt at once ancient and ahead of its time.” - Rolling Stone Magazine

Rolling Stone Magazine has named the late iconic Israeli singer Ofra Haza among the 200 greatest singers of all time. The list <[link removed]>, compiled by Rolling Stone staff, encompasses “100 years of pop music as an ongoing global conversation.”

A singer, songwriter, actress, and Grammy Award-nominated recording artist, Haza came to fame as the runner-up at the 1983 Eurovison Song Contest, and was known in the Western world as "The Israeli Madonna." In her brief career, she recorded 27 albums and performed on concert stages throughout Europe, America, and Israel.

The Abraham Accords have fundamentally changed the Middle East. Israel now has peace and normalized relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco (in addition to pre-existing treaties with Egypt and Jordan).

At CIJA’s sixth Legal Task Force Conference online on March 2, presented jointly with Jewish Federations from across Canada, you will hear internationally renowned speakers discuss the latest developments in this true paradigm shift in the Middle East. Look for our invitation in your inbox soon!
