He is deeply honored to be able to continue working on behalf of Long Islanders in the 118th Congress. ANDREW IN THE NEWS ‘SALT’ cap foes poised to influence House GOP tax agenda " Republicans who flipped or held districts in blue states are gearing up to flex newfound muscles in their party's slim majority against a GOP-created limit on deducting state and local taxes, known as the 'SALT' cap...House Republican leadership and tax writers on the Ways and Means Committee 'need to realize ... we are in the majority because of Republicans winning in New York, New Jersey and California and, by the way, we don't like the cap on state and local tax deductions,' Rep. Andrew Garbarino said in an interview. A New York Republican who pulled off a 22-point win in his GOP-leaning Long Island district in the midterm elections, Garbarino is a co-chair of the bipartisan SALT Caucus. He said he's sharing his message — that an extension of the $10,000 SALT cap doesn't have the votes to pass the House — with party leaders and the Republicans vying to be the next Ways and Means chairman...at least two members of the SALT Caucus have been among names circulating for open seats on Ways and Means...By late November, proponents like Garbarino and Democratic backer Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey said they were already discussing SALT with newly elected Republicans. Between those new allies and a thin majority allowing just five Republicans to derail their party's plans next year, Garbarino was optimistic on SALT. 'It's a strong position to be in,' he said. Andrew Recognizes Outgoing West Sayville Fire Chief This week, the West Sayville Fire Department gathered to honor its outgoing chief, Jeffrey Houghtalen, for his outstanding and distinguished service. Andrew was proud to provide a Congressional certificate of recognition and an American flag which had been flown over the Capitol for the occasion. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew's Small Business Cybersecurity Bill Signed Into Law Last week, as 2022 drew to a close, a bill Andrew introduced - H.R. 4515, The Small Business Development Center Cyber Training Act - was signed into law by President Biden after passing both Chambers of Congress before the end of the 117th Congress. "Following the recent cyber attack against Suffolk County, Long Islanders are more aware than ever of the dangers of cyber crime, but we must take active steps to safeguard our community from these threats," Andrew said. "As both a member of the Small Business Committee and Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee’s Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Innovation, I spent my first two years in Congress committed to empowering small businesses with the resources necessary to protect themselves and mitigate cyber risks to their financial security and intellectual property. I am pleased that I was able to secure the passage of this bill and see it signed into law as the final action of my first term." Read more about this new law here. House Elects Kevin McCarthy To Be Speaker Of The House This week, the House of Representatives voted to elect Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House for the 118th Congress. Following the final vote, Andrew released a statement saying, "The Republican party is a big tent party with many voices, views, and priorities. We are reflective of the American people and the result of this diversity of opinion is what we saw play out in the race for Speaker. Whatever our differences, we are all united in our singular commitment to bettering the lives of the American people and reversing many of the disastrous policies of the last two years under one-party Democrat rule in Washington. Today, we elected my friend and colleague, Kevin McCarthy, as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives. On Monday, we get to work delivering on our Commitment To America which our constituents sent us here to do. I fully intend to hit the ground running - securing healthcare for 9/11 first responders and survivors, taking care of our veterans, strengthening the southern border, and reducing the economic burden Long Islanders have faced over the last two years. We have a job to do, and I am confident we can get it done under the new Republican majority and under the leadership of Speaker McCarthy." Thanks for reading!
