Jack — it was bittersweet moment. On Friday night, Nancy Pelosi officially passed the Leadership torch to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
On the one hand, it was a powerful, inspirational image: one, an absolute icon of Democratic politics, the other, the up-and-coming face of a new generation of American politics.
But then there was the...other contrast.
Nancy Pelosi, possibly the most effective, powerful Speaker in a generation, passing on the Gavel to a man so simpering and weak that he allowed the most extreme members of his caucus to bulldoze him, just to gain the position.
That's right, Jack: in Kevin McCarthy's House, the most powerful member will not be the Speaker. In fact, it will not be anyone in Republican "Leadership."
The most powerful members in Kevin McCarthy's House will be the 20 extremists who held the Speakership hostage for days, until he feebly capitulated to every single one of their demands.
"I ran out of things I could even imagine to ask for," said Matt Gaetz, on his decision to finally allow McCarthy the Speakership.
Jack. this Republican House is forever beholden to its most extreme members. It's dangerous for the institution, and it's dangerous for America. But we CAN push back on their disastrous agenda, if we STAND TOGETHER. Can you donate $15 to help Democrats DEFEND America from the GOP??
