John,
While I’ve been back in Washington for a chaotic and troubling start to the 118th Congress, I’ve been reminded that I really don’t “do Congress” the way most of my colleagues do.
- I don’t take money from corporate PACs, federal lobbyists, or executives from Big Oil, Big Pharma, or Wall Street Banks.
- I’m leading the fight to ban Members of Congress and their families from trading stocks.
- When Congress brought back earmarks (which are a way of funding Members’ pet projects) in 2021, I was the only Democrat to oppose them.
In practice, that means while many of my colleagues take long meetings with lobbyists, I get to spend my time on the issues that really matter to my constituents. It means that instead of spending each day calling corporate donors, my campaign is run largely because of grassroots supporters.
I might not look or talk like most of my colleagues. I drive a minivan and my toughest constituents are my three kids. But Congress should look like the people we represent, and I’m proud to be representing the many families of Orange County.
Thanks for being on Team Porter,
Katie
