Friend, this week, Sen. Debbie Stabenow – my fellow Michigander, one of my closest colleagues and a dear friend – announced that she will not seek reelection next year and instead retire after her term ends.
It's been a true honor to work with Debbie in the Senate. Throughout her many decades in public service, she has shattered countless glass ceilings and won huge victories for Michigan families. She was first elected to public office at just 24 years old, and she holds the unique distinction of being the first woman to ever represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate.
In every position that she's held, from local office to the Michigan Legislature to the U.S. House of Representatives to the U.S. Senate, Debbie has been a fierce, tireless advocate for Michigan families. I am incredibly proud of our work together on some of the most pressing issues facing our country – including our recent victory in lowering health care and prescription drug costs for Michiganders back home.
I'll sorely miss Debbie's dedicated partnership, her counsel and her bold commitment to delivering change for the families we proudly serve. But at the same time, I share her excitement and hope about welcoming a new generation of leaders. I'm certain they will work hard to fill Debbie's shoes and carry on her commitment to a better future.
I'm excited to continue my work with Debbie as she serves the remainder of her term – and to celebrate her well-earned retirement!
Thank you,
Gary Peters
