For the first time in over a century, the House Majority was unable to agree upon a candidate for House Speaker on the first go. Or the second. Or the twelfth. Instead, we saw days worth of messy MAGA Republican in-fighting, which delayed the start of the 118th Congress. New members of the House couldn’t be sworn in and any pretense of legislating was forgotten. In the end, after 15 votes, Kevin McCarthy finally convinced enough of the MAGA faction to vote for him as the new Speaker of the House. He might not be as bombastic as Jim Jordan or as publicly cartoonish as Marjorie Taylor Greene, but trust me when I say he’ll be just as dangerous. He’s a Trump lacky who voted against certifying the 2020 election results and tried to block the investigation into January 6th. The Speaker fight was really a preview into what MAGA Republicans have in store for us for the next two years: endless chaos and obstruction. Today, more than 70% of House Republicans are election deniers, including every single member of House leadership. Any policies they do manage to pass will only help their corporate donors and advance their extreme agenda—including threatening our freedom to vote, criminalizing abortion, and attacking Social Security and Medicaid. But we’re built for this fight. From the beginning, we’ve taken on MAGA extremism and won, and this year, we’ll do it again. Thanks for all that you do! Sean Eldridge |
