Weekend Reading

Dear John,

Happy New Year! Last month we asked for your help to secure three matching gifts. Thanks to the generosity and kindness of supporters like you, we made each match—and are ready for the year ahead.

Thank you for all the ways you support our mission to build a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world. We couldn’t do this work without you!

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Moving beyond prisons in California: [link removed] Two years ago, community groups, including AFSC, started a campaign to shut down 10 prisons in California by 2025. Thanks to their efforts since then, California has announced it would close four facilities. We must continue to build alternatives to incarceration, writes AFSC’S Fatimeh Khan.

Tell President Biden: Uphold the right to asylum!: [link removed] This week, the president announced new draconian measures to further bar migrants from seeking asylum and militarize the U.S.-Mexico border. That includes expanding Title 42, which has allowed the U.S. to rapidly deport hundreds of thousands of people since 2020. This cruel response to people seeking safety will only place them in further danger. Sign the petition today.

Register: Dilemmas of Rebuilding Gaza (Jan. 12, 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT): [link removed] Join us for the first in our new monthly webinar series with contributors to “Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire.” This month, we’ll talk with Harvard scholar and Palestine expert Dr. Sara Roy and Palestinian architect Salem Al Qudwa about the challenges and opportunities in developing and rebuilding Gaza after decades of Israeli occupation.

Need reliable retirement income? [link removed] Charitable gift annuity rates are now the highest they’ve been in 10 years. A gift annuity pays you reliable income while supporting AFSC’s work for peace and justice. Request an illustration.

Did you catch AFSC on “Jeopardy!”? On Dec. 30, the game show featured the following answer in its “Friend Zone” category: “Promoting peace and human rights since 1917, the American Friends Service committee is guided by the principles of this religious group.” A contestant got it right—we hope you did, too!

Be well and take care
