** Drilling Down on Fossil Fuels and Climate Change

At a time when scientists say the U.S. needs to move away from fossil fuels, there is a boom in natural gas exports. The pretext: Europe needs it to heat homes and run businesses now that it’s lost access to Russian gas supplies because of the war in Ukraine. But that’s not who’s actually getting the natural gas.

This week on Reveal ([link removed]) , we explore why America is backsliding on fossil fuels and what that means for climate change.

You’ll also hear the story of Chevak, a tiny, predominantly Indigenous community in Alaska. There, climate change is already wreaking havoc, and the U.S. government is bungling the response.

Our new documentary film, “Victim/Suspect ([link removed]) ,” will have its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival later this month. If you can’t make it to the festival, which runs Jan. 19-29 in Park City, Utah, you still have a chance to see the film. Tickets for online screenings go on sale Jan. 12 on the Sundance website ([link removed]) and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the film
In this Netflix original documentary, CIR reporter Rae de Leon discovers a surprising number of legal cases nationwide that involve women reporting sexual assault to the police, only to be accused of fabricating their allegations. These women are then charged with crimes, sometimes facing years in prison. “Victim/Suspect” follows de Leon as she gathers firsthand accounts from numerous young women and their families and interviews police and legal experts. Simultaneously, de Leon re-examines elements of the initial police investigations, unearthing telling recordings of police interviews of women reporting their sexual assault.

Director Nancy Schwartzman describes the film as a “love letter to investigative journalism and the effort it takes to expose these harms at a nationwide and systemic level.” Get the full details ([link removed]) .


** Listen: Reveal’s Ese Olumhense Talks Voting and Democracy on In The Thick Podcast

This week, Reveal reporter Ese Olumhense appeared on In The Thick, Futuro Media’s politics, race and culture podcast. In the episode, Olumhense discusses takeaways from the 2022 midterm elections, including the increase in voter suppression tactics since 2020.

Olumhense’s own reporting ([link removed]) found that in the last two years, at least 130 bills have been introduced across 42 states that would increase the involvement of law enforcement in the voting process. The proliferation of this type of legislation is the most threatening front in voter suppression efforts in generations.

“The reach of the criminal legal system in the voting space is something that chills me deeply, and I would encourage folks to pay attention,” Olumhense said on the podcast.
