Hi John,

Today is the second anniversary of the January 6th attack on our democracy.

I still remember the worn faces of our Capitol Police. I still remember stepping over the broken glass that littered the hallways. It sometimes feels like the attack was yesterday.

A lot has happened since then. We now know so much more about what occurred and why. Including the involvement of Donald Trump himself.

It’s not lost on me that the Republican extremists who refused to certify the election on January 6th are the same ones holding up the Speaker’s vote today. When far-right Republicans’ only policy is “burn it all down” then it shouldn’t be a surprise when everything catches on fire.

So where do we go from here? I don’t know how this Speaker debacle ends, but I do know I’m incredibly concerned about what this means for governing the next two years. If we want to get anything done for our country, we must stand up to the extreme right. And my Republican colleagues need to do some real soul searching about the role they want to play in history.

It’s a solemn day for me and my team. Thank you for your kind words. We will continue to work our hearts out.
