Daily Docket — Friday, Jan. 6

Two years ago on Jan. 6, 2021, American democracy was violently assaulted. Our democracy is sacred, but fragile. We must continue the hard work to strengthen voting rights, hold our leaders accountable and elect candidates who believe in the will of the people.

Here are some updates from today.

• Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) signed House Bill 458 into law, the first voter suppression law to be enacted after the 2022 midterm elections. The bill imposes a strict photo ID requirement on Ohio voters and includes several other restrictions on voting in the state.

• A three-judge panel struck down South Carolina’s congressional map after finding the 1st District is a racial gerrymander. The judges instructed the Legislature to enact a new map by March 31.

• Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates (R) and Vice Chairman Clint Hickman (R) announced an independent investigation into the Election Day printer issues in Maricopa County, Arizona.
