January 6th, 2021 was one of the darkest days in American history. After a pro-Trump mob attempted – but ultimately failed – to violently stop the certification of the 2020 election results, our democracy was left shaken.

In the days that followed, NewDems took immediate action to ensure that accountability and justice would be served:

• Every NewDem voted to pass a bipartisan article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump.
• The 117th Congress swiftly passed both The National Commission to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act and The Emergency Security Supplemental to Respond to January 6th Appropriations Act – two NewDem-endorsed bills aimed at investigating the January 6th insurrection and better preparing the Capitol complex from future potential threats.
• NewDems endorsed and voted to advance both the For The People Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to reduce corruption, strengthen our democracy, and protect access to the ballot box.
• Four NewDems – Reps. Adam Schiff (CA-28), Pete Aguilar (CA-31), Stephanie Murphy (FL-07), and former Rep. Elaine Luria (VA-02) – served on the House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack. Their tireless efforts led to four criminal referrals of Donald Trump to the Justice Department – concluding that he intentionally misled and provoked the insurrectionists as part of an attempt to stay in power after losing the 2020 election.

As 2023 gets underway, NewDems will be acting as a check on the MAGA-aligned extremists who have gained seats in the new 118th Congress – and we will continue to champion legislation to protect and expand voting rights, defend our democratic institutions, and hold those accountable who attempt to undermine our elections. 

With Republicans gaining the majority, the work ahead will be challenging, but we know the American people are with us. Today and every day, thank you for standing with us in our efforts to protect our progress and defend our democracy.
