John,
Two years ago today, white supremacists stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the will of the people and the results of the 2020 presidential election.
They were aided and abetted in that effort not just by the sitting president of the United States, but also by 147 Republican members of Congress who voted to overturn the results of the election.
Now, two years later, we are seeing some of those same members of Congress holding the beginning of a new Congress hostage to their extremist demands.
For years, white nationalists and extremists have known that they cannot win a majority for their unpopular policies.
That’s why they tried to undo a popular election through intimidation and violence two years ago.
That’s why they have relied on an unelected Supreme Court majority to try and take away our freedoms.
And that’s why right now they are seeking complete control over Republican leadership in Congress — control that they then plan to use to hold working people and the global economy hostage to their demands for vicious cuts to things like Social Security and Medicaid.
What we are seeing this week is only a preview of what the Republican-controlled House will inflict on the entire country for the next two years — the protection of their own power and interests no matter the cost. We need to be ready to fight back.
In 2023, WFP members will be fighting alongside our champions in Congress to defend against these attacks, protect and expand freedom and justice for everyone, and pass policies that actually help working people and hold the wealthy and powerful accountable.
And we’ll be ramping up our electoral efforts so that in 2024, we can put an end to the Republican control of the House and elect a governing majority that will put working people first.
But until then, we'll keep fighting for a country that works for all of us, for a government that treats people with respect, and for the freedom to build a life on our own terms, where we can do more than just survive — where we can thrive.
Thank you for fighting alongside us.
In solidarity,
Working Families Party
