Friend,
Two years ago, a violent mob launched an insurrection on the Capitol seeking to overturn the will of the American people and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power after a free and fair election – at least seven people died as a result, including three police officers, and 14 officers were injured.
Over recent months, we've witnessed evidence and testimony by the heroic law enforcement officers who defended our democracy and upheld their oaths to the Constitution. We honor their sacrifices, and we owe them our deepest gratitude.
And we owe each other the hard work of buttressing our democracy at every turn and reinforcing core principles about what it means to be an American.
These principles are fundamental: that all people are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that all Americans have an equal vote in choosing our government to secure these rights.
The work to advance these rights is not always easy, but it is vital. As your attorney general, I, alongside you, will do everything in my power to uphold our Constitution and support a democracy that is of, by, and for the people – all the people.
