Dear Friend,

Two years ago, a violent mob of armed insurrectionists, many of them proudly displaying symbols of white supremacist hate, attacked the U.S. Capitol with the intent to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Though they were unsuccessful, opponents of free and fair elections have continued to push the Big Lie and make threats of violence across the country. They’ve also engaged in strategies to deliberately undermine democracy, such as passing measures in state legislatures to increase barriers to the ballot box, spreading disinformation to suppress voter participation, and gerrymandering electoral maps for partisan political gain.

The stakes for our democracy have never been higher. Moreover, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and LCV Education Fund (LCVEF) know that the communities who have historically been excluded from the voting process are the same communities who face the greatest threats from the climate crisis and pollution.

Recently, LCV and LCVEF (or, “our organizations”) released a new report that details all of the work our Democracy for All (DFA) program was able to accomplish — thanks to your support — during the 2021-2022 election cycle. These efforts include registering new voters, helping people make plans to vote, encouraging people to utilize mail-in voting and early voting, recruiting poll workers to ensure free and fair elections, and pushing back against voter disinformation both during and after the midterms.

As the largest nonpartisan civic engagement program in the environmental movement, LCVEF and state partners contacted over 2 million voters, and in the process secured 125,500 voter registrations and more than 89,000 pledges to vote in historically excluded communities.

We also undertook an innovative, artist- and community-driven, “out-of-home” nonpartisan GOTV visibility campaign in Illinois, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin to increase voter turnout in communities systemically facing barriers to the ballot box by reaching voters through art.

We can’t have a healthy environment without a healthy democracy. If the people most impacted by the climate crisis are also most impacted by systemic electoral barriers and voter suppression, their calls for a healthier environment will not be heard.

Thanks to your generosity, over multiple election cycles, LCVEF, LCV, and our 30+ state affiliates in the Conservation Voter Movement (CVM) have worked to increase participation in our democracy and combat systemically racist barriers to the electoral process through a multi-faceted civic engagement program. We will continue to work to ensure that U.S. democracy delivers on its promise to be a government of, by, and for the people — and that we never experience another January 6th.

We’re grateful for your generous investments to make our democracy programs possible. With your continued support, our organizations will keep working to advance a more fair, free, and just democracy for all.

Onward,
Gene Karpinski
President, League of Conservation Voters and LCV Education Fund
