Sign our petition and help put country before party!

Hi Friend,

It’s so important the No Labels community understands the stakes of the House speaker race.

In the coming hours and days, House Republicans will decide whether they want to govern for the next two years, or whether they’ll let a small faction hold America hostage to their extreme demands.

We need your help to ensure they make the right decision. We need you to sign our petition to let key House Republicans know that they need to stand strong and put country before party.

As you have likely heard, a group of far-right members, led by the likes of Rep. Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, are making escalating demands of Kevin McCarthy to give him their votes for House Speaker.

Some of the changes they are asking for – like ensuring members have more time to read legislation before it’s voted on – are actually good. But two of the demands in particular are a red line for No Labels, because they effectively allow the far-right Freedom Caucus to control Congress. We don’t believe any House Republican should vote for a speaker who agrees to these two demands, which are:

  • Enabling a single member of the House to file a “motion to vacate the [speaker] chair:” This is effectively a motion to get rid of the current speaker. In a previous Congress, the Problem Solvers Caucus fought for a rules reform that required more than half the majority party to support this motion. But if the threshold drops to one, it means a House speaker will spend the next two years knowing they could lose their job if they make a move someone like Matt Gaetz doesn’t like. It’s a recipe for chaos and catering to every crazy demand of the most irresponsible members.

  • Putting several Freedom Caucus members on the House Rules committee: This little-known committee is arguably the most important in the whole House. It’s like the House’s Board of Directors. The Rules committee decided which bills do and don’t get a vote and which amendments get offered. The Freedom Caucus wants more power on this committee to ensure that only far right proposals make it the House floor.

We can’t emphasize the importance of this moment enough. The most radical members in the Republican party are making a brazen power grab and they’re going to get it if an equally determined group of pragmatic House members don’t stand in their way.

Please, as soon as you can, sign our petition and demand that House members don’t cave in to these concessions.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., the iconic figure who served as youth coordinator to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and who remains one of the Civil Rights Movement’s most revered figures, has agreed to join Sen. Joe Lieberman and Gov. Larry Hogan as our national co-chair. This is just another sign of how our movement to unify the country is growing stronger.  Join us for an online “happening” where Dr. Chavis Jr. will participate in a national discussion about where our movement will go from here.

Five Facts on House Speaker Madness

All eyes are on the House of Representatives as it slogs through round after round of voting to determine the speaker of the House for the new Congress. While unprecedented in modern U.S. history, this is not the first time this normally mundane process has been bogged down in multiple rounds of voting. Here are Five Facts about previous contentious speaker elections in the nation’s history.

Ohio and Pennsylvania Choose Speakers for Unity

In Ohio and Pennsylvania, state legislators this week went through the same process to elect their own speakers of the House – whoever receives a majority of votes, wins. In both instances, Republicans had a majority that could elect a speaker. But in each race, the eventual winner won by promoting unity over a more partisan approach and garnering votes from both Republicans and Democrats.
