Two years ago today — just one day after my official swearing into Congress — my colleagues and I were trapped in the Capitol while MAGA extremists raided the Capitol building.
People lost their lives and the terrorists at the helm of this tragic event instilled immense fear in our country — all while Donald Trump and his supporters urged on the attack.
John, the fight to hold these insurrectionists and the Members of Congress involved wholly responsible for this event is nowhere near finished. And in order to keep up this work, I'll need your support to amplify our call for accountability. If you stand with me, can you chip in to support this work today?
What we saw on this day 2 years ago was the real and raw representation of what the Trump administration and their hateful ideologies created at the heart of our country.
We are continually learning new information that proves the threat to our democracy is still ever-present. On January 8, 2021, I introduced the Congressional Oversight of Unjust Policing Act (COUP Act) to establish a national commission to investigate this day and everything leading up to it. And with your support, we saw the adoption of a 9/11 style commission to investigate January 6 and hold these bad actors accountable for their wrongdoings.
While I am immensely proud of the strides we've made to heal our country, our work is not yet finished. We need to be vigilant, bold, and purposeful with our time, resources, and values. No more will we allow racism, xenophobia, and pure delusion run our government and our country into the ground.
