Today is the second anniversary of the day a violent mob — incited by Donald Trump and insurrectionist Republicans — attacked the United States Capitol in an attempt to undermine our democracy and silence the will of the people.
We still have not seen meaningful accountability for the people who enabled and inflamed the violence. Right now, some of the same Republicans who fomented insurrection are standing on the House floor and creating renewed chaos by preventing the election of a Speaker.
We will not stop in our pursuit of accountability, of progress, and of an end to white supremacy. I am thankful to the January 6th committee for its transparent and thorough investigation, and I urge the Department of Justice to take action by immediately prosecuting Donald Trump and holding everyone accountable — including members of Congress and members of the previous Administration.
January 6th is an indelible stain on our country’s history and a source of lasting trauma for everyone involved, including the Congressional staff, facilities workers, Capitol Police officers, Members of Congress — and each and every one of their families and friends who wondered if their loved ones would return home safely.
We owe it to those who lost their lives and to everyone affected by such heinous violence to be relentless in our pursuit of accountability, and do everything in our power to ensure an attack like this never happens again.
In solidarity,
Ayanna Pressley
