Team,
Two years ago today, we witnessed a harrowing attack on our democracy. I was on the floor of the Senate on January 6 – I’ll never forget it.
As I reflect on that day, I’m proud to say that I’ve done everything in my power to ensure we never allow the events of January 6, 2021 to ever happen again. After working with my Senate colleagues, we passed the bipartisan Electoral Count Reform Act , enacting greater protections against attempts by politicians and insurrectionists to undermine the will of the voters.
Our bill helps prevent dangerous attempts from fringe members of Congress or a defeated President to overturn the results of an election – circumventing the potential for uncertainty surrounding vote certification and the transition of power.
This is a positive step towards preventing future violent insurrections, but my work doesn’t stop here. There is still more to be done to safeguard our democracy.
What’s next? In the new Congress, we need to increase penalties for those who threaten election workers, increase USPS capacity to handle election mail, and advance new protections for voting rights.
The passage of our Electoral Count Reform Act is a massive first step – but I won’t stop working to bolster trust in our elections and secure our democracy from those who seek to undermine it.
Thank you,
Mark
