John,
Two years ago today, I was prepared to stand up to my fellow Members of Congress in their attempt to overturn a legitimate election — but I was not prepared for violent rioters to break into the Capitol, encouraged by then-President Trump.
These terrorists attacked law enforcement officers; unleashed chaos and terror among Members, staff, and their families; occupied and ransacked offices; vandalized government property; and succeeded in interfering with our Constitutional duty to count electoral votes.
This attack on the Capitol was an insurrection incited by our then-President, and every single action taken in an attempt to overturn the election was an act of sedition.
January 6, 2021, was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history and as such, we must act decisively in defense of the people and the institutions of our government.
If we do not act, what will stop this from happening in the future? If we do not act, we risk the future of our republic, which has already been damaged by the former president.
We cannot allow this behavior to become normal — to do so would betray our sacred oath to the Constitution to protect it against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
Sincerely,
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
