John – it’s been two years since the direct assault on our democracy by emboldened extremists on January 6, 2021. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on that day and our work since to protect democracy. The attack on our Capitol was a violent, coordinated effort to overturn an election on behalf of Donald Trump.

I will never forget watching the news that day. And on this anniversary, I have a renewed commitment to fight for our democracy and protect free and fair elections.

Over the past two years, we have made significant progress:
– After extensive investigations, the FBI has identified and charged more than 978 insurrectionists for their crimes against our nation.
– The January 6 Committee found that former President Donald Trump broke five federal laws trying to overturn the 2020 election that he lost.
– The Committee has recommended four major charges against Trump, including conspiracy to defraud the US, conspiracy to make false statements, obstruction of an official proceeding, and inciting an insurrection.

Even though the GOP now has control of the House, our work holding those responsible for the January 6 insurrection must go on. Now, the Department of Justice has the January 6 Committee’s findings in hand and is working alongside President Biden to ensure justice prevails.

The first days of a Republican-controlled House have already been chaotic, showing the GOP’s lack of leadership. House Democrats remain united and ready to continue our work no matter how the GOP holds us back.

In this together,

Shontel Brown
