Friends,
Today marks exactly two years since January 6, 2021: One of the darkest days in our nation’s history.
After losing the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump used false claims of a “stolen” election to push his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol Building and stop the certification of our free and fair election results. While his efforts ultimately failed, the violent mob he unleashed killed multiple people – with victims ranging from Capitol police officers to his own supporters.
In the two years since the January 6 attack, I’m proud of the work we’ve done to hold Donald Trump accountable for his unprecedented assault against our democracy.
After being appointed by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi to be one of the nine impeachment managers to prosecute President Trump in the US Senate – the first representative of a U.S. territory to serve in this role – I helped prove Donald Trump’s guilt beyond any reasonable doubt and delivered the most bipartisanship impeachment vote in Congressional history.
Then, following his impeachment, I was proud to support the creation of an independent commission to investigate January 6. And just last month, after over a year of rigorous investigation, the House Select Committee on January 6 issued four criminal referrals of Donald Trump to the Justice Department – concluding that he intentionally misled and provoked the insurrectionists as part of an attempt to stay in power after losing the 2020 election.
The road to justice can be slow and bumpy – but it is always a road worth traveling. Americans deserve truth, transparency, and accountability for what our country endured on January 6. And as your Congresswoman, upholding my oath to defend our democracy has been an incredible honor. But the fight isn’t over:
Just days into taking control of the House, Republicans are already moving to retain January 6 committee documents – and there is indication that they could attempt to dispute the committee’s findings.
We cannot and will not allow this to happen. We’ve worked too hard over the past two years to follow the facts, uncover the truth, and ensure that those involved in plots to undermine our democracy are held accountable. Now, we need to fight tooth and nail to protect our progress.
As Democrats, we must stand united against far-right extremists and defend our democracy starting now. If you’re with me, then please contribute $5 or more immediately to stand with me in defending our democracy in the new Congress. [[link removed]]
Thank you,
Rep. Stacey Plaskett
