Two years ago today, Donald Trump and his allies in Congress attempted to overthrow American democracy. It was a horrific day, a stain on our nation’s history, and a reminder that we must never again take for granted the democratic institutions that sustain our republic.

I’ll be honest with you: it is jarring now to be serving in the same building as some of the people who led the fight to overturn the 2020 election, and who are continuing to use Trump’s Big Lie as a pretext for trying to take away Americans’ fundamental right to vote.

Over the last four days, we’ve gotten a small glimpse of the chaos that these legislators will cause if they are given control of the House agenda — and Kevin McCarthy has promised to give them exactly that in exchange for their votes for Speaker.

It is clearer than ever, Team, that America needs leaders who are committed to our democracy and serious about solving the problems regular people face — providing the real solutions that I am committed to delivering, and that our Democratic House majority delivered when they were in power.
