It’s been exactly two years since a mob of insurrectionists attacked the U.S. Capitol, and chaos continues to reign supreme as the new Republican House majority attempts to make it through their first week. Over 70% of House GOP members in the soon to be 118th Congress share something in common with the January 6th insurrectionists—they are election deniers too. So it should come as no surprise that these subverters of democracy are themselves having a little trouble with democracy this week as they struggle to elect a leader. You read that right. If your representative is a Republican, there’s a very good chance they’re an election denier. There are 135 incumbent Republicans who voted to not certify Joe Biden’s victory and at least 27 incoming freshmen who deny that Joe Biden won. We have a problem. Even while grinding our government to a halt through their chaotic Speaker of the House election, House MAGA extremists have already made their priorities clear: helping their corporate donors, wasting taxpayer dollars on sham investigations, criminalizing abortion, and gutting the bipartisan Office of Congressional Ethics. The MAGA majority’s dysfunction was on full display this week as Republicans failed over and over again to perform the simple task of agreeing on who will be the next Speaker of the House, leaving the House unable to even swear in new members, let alone govern. “Representative” may be in their title, but trust us when we say these election-deniers have no plans to represent the American people. They’re not interested in addressing the issues the majority of Americans care about, this clown show of a House election proves that! The only thing they are committed to is undermining our democracy, including by investigating the January 6th committee. We’ve taken on this MAGA extremism before. Resist this election-denying majority and encourage your community to do the same by sending a pre-written letter to the editor today. Sami and Chloe |
