I wanted to take a moment to honor our state’s senior U.S. Senator, Debbie Stabenow.
This morning, Senator Stabenow announced that she won’t be seeking re-election in 2024 . And when I spoke with her not long after, I thanked her for everything she’s done for Michigan — for our farmers, our manufacturers, our children, our families.
For almost 50 years, she has worked tirelessly to serve Michigan. She literally never seems to run out of energy, and has a passion for Michigan that oozes out of her.
I also thanked her for all she has done for me personally — for being a friend, confidant, and invaluable sounding board.
Since 2019, I have been lucky to represent her old seat from when she served in Congress. So her influence, both direct and indirect, on policy and politics in mid-Michigan can’t be overstated.
As the first woman elected to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate, her retirement announcement provides us all an opportunity to reflect on her trailblazing impact.
Over the next days and weeks, there will be much discussion about what comes next for Michigan, but for now, my thanks goes to Senator Stabenow for being a true public servant tirelessly fighting for Michigan.
