John, What we've witnessed on the House Floor the past few days, the Republican bedlam, isn't shocking. Yet it's still unbelievable, dangerous for democracy and we must do what we can to end this Lord of the Flies idiocy as soon as we can. Will you join us right now in giving $5, $10, $25 or whatever you can afford to to Rep. Torres' fund to put adults back in charge in the House, and start dealing with real threats? Summary: One faction of right wing extremists is mad at another faction of RW extremists--so six failed votes and no House Speaker. We must go back to the pre-Civil War era for every other time it's taken more than two ballots, with one exception. That one—which took nine—was 100 years ago. Kevin McCarthy looks set to equal or beat it. We knew the Republican Party was a clown car filled with corruption, cruelty, incompetence, conmen, Russian subterfuge, people more concerned about their next Fox News hit than governing. But this is truly and astonishingly absurd. It's also dangerous for our democracy. Without a Speaker, members can't be sworn in. Therefore, we have no House of Representatives, meaning no House Intelligence Committee monitoring domestic and international threats, no Appropriations Committee working on how to fund our government so it doesn't shut down, etc. That's why Congressman Ritchie Torres—a charismatic young leader and first gay Afro Latino elected to Congress—has launched a fund to take back the House. It may take until 2024, though with such a small majority (six seats), deaths, retirements, arrests, etc could lead to its happening much sooner. As Congressman Torres said in a statement:  |
