As the struggle to elect a new House Speaker continues, some of the
biggest negotiations are happening outside Congress. The Hill [ [link removed] ]reported
yesterday that the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), a PAC endorsed by
Rep. Kevin McCarthy, struck a deal with the Club for Growth that would
garner additional support for McCarthy’s bid for Speaker. The CLF has
agreed not to spend or support spending in any open-seat primaries in safe
GOP districts in exchange for the Club for Growth’s support for McCarthy.

These shady backroom deals fundamentally corrupt our democracy. They leave
our elected officials beholden to corporations and special interests,
rather than the people who chose them to lead.

The impact of big money in politics can be seen every single day. Every
major issue discussed in Congress, from environmental protection to
commonsense gun reform, has players behind the scene seeking to influence
members of Congress to vote in their favor. One [ [link removed] ]study even found that
the preferences of the average American voter have a “minuscule,
near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.” That
defies any and all definitions of a democracy.

I firmly believe that the influence of corporate and special interest
contributions only harms us, and it’s why I never have and never will take
PAC money. I’m proud to be the founder of the bipartisan Congressional No
PAC Caucus, composed of lawmakers dedicated to serving the people of the
United States above all else. But unseating these outside forces is going
to take support from as many members of Congress as possible.
