John --
I just finished reading my dear friend Jane Kleeb's new book, "Harvest the Vote: How Democrats Can Win Again in Rural America."
I am probably much more qualified as a cattle buyer than I am as a book critic, but I must say I was blown away by Jane's book. I find her in-depth understanding of what makes rural Americans tick to be quite remarkable. One of the main stories Jane tells in the book is our story -- the story of our ten-year fight to stop the Keystone XL pipeline, and lessons learned so far.
When I met Jane back in 2010, she encouraged me to speak out about my concerns about the KXL pipeline, and before I knew it I was the face of the "Stand with Randy" campaign, complete with my actual face on billboards and t-shirts, and getting interviewed by the The New York Times.
At the time we first met I had been a lifelong Republican and in the cattle business, so it would not seem like on the surface Jane and I would become not only friends, but agree on so many issues facing our families.
Without Jane there to lead and grow our unlikely alliance of Pipeline Fighters -- ranchers and farmers from across the political spectrum like myself and my neighbors, along with Tribal Nations, students and young people, and everyday Nebraskans who want a livable planet for their grandkids -- I fear that our ten-years-long battle would have been lost long ago.
"Harvest the Vote" is packed full of insights and practical, real-world ideas both for Nebraska and rural America's future, and I highly recommend that Pipeline Fighters invest in this worthwhile read.
You can pick up a copy of "Harvest the Vote" at your local Nebraska independent bookstore when the book comes out on January 21st or you can pre-order a copy of "Harvest the Vote" now on Amazon.com.
