As the House of Representatives enters its third day of squabbling over who will be the Speaker of the House, the question on everyone’s lips is: What do the holdouts actually want?
Yesterday, the picture became a bit clearer.

Holdout Ralph Norman says speaker needs to commit to using government shutdown and debt ceiling default threat to cut spending and to following through on threat if needed

What “spending cuts” are they talking about? Surely not the $858 billion in military spending―they are talking about taking an ax to our Social Security system.
We’re in Washington DC and around the country, making it completely clear: Republicans want to destroy Social Security, and Democrats want to protect and expand it. Donate $7 today!
Rep. Lauren Boebert, who has also voted to block the House from formally convening, echoed Norman’s demands on TV yesterday:1
“The taxpayers are actually winning here, because Congress hasn’t organized, so it can’t spend money we don’t have.”
Boebert apparently doesn’t understand that the House’s failure to convene doesn’t shut down the rest of the government. But it’s easy to see how her attitude will endanger us when it’s time to take action on the debt limit. Republicans all voted for a $2 trillion tax giveaway to the wealthy when Donald Trump was President―their concerns about the debt aren’t sincere. They will use any pretext to destroy our Social Security system.
We’re gearing up for the biggest fight over Social Security in more than a decade. Donate $7 to protect our Social Security system!
Thanks,
