** 307,000 LGBT people in Virginia vulnerable to discrimination

Virginia's legal landscape and social climate put the state’s 257,000 LGBT adults and 50,000 LGBT youth at risk of discrimination and harassment. Our new study provides data and research documenting the prevalence of several forms of stigma and discrimination against LGBT adults and youth in Virginia. Researchers estimate that anti-LGBT stigma and discrimination negatively impact the state economy by tens of millions of dollars each year.

Statewide statutes in Virginia do not explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in areas such as employment, housing, and public accommodations. On January 10, the Virginia Values Act, which would provide comprehensive protections to LGBT Virginians, was introduced in the state senate.

** State profiles of LGBT poverty in the US

A new study comparing poverty rates between LGBT and cisgender straight people in 35 states found that in a majority of states, LGBT people experience higher rates of poverty than cisgender straight people. In addition to poverty rates, researchers examined social statuses that traditionally contribute to economic stability, including gender, race, age, and urban-rural residence in some states.
