Last year reminded us of the courage of everyday people—Ukrainian soldiers, Iranian women, Sudanese teachers and many others—risking everything to defy tyranny and create a better future for their countries.

The forces driving this global battle between democracy and authoritarianism sometimes seem beyond the influence of individuals, but this could not be further from the truth.
