The Pittsburgh region is the most landslide-prone region in the state. The soft “Pittsburgh red beds” are notoriously unstable when wet, and the name Monongahela is believed to be derived ([link removed]) from a Native American word meaning “river with the sliding banks.” Houses and infrastructure are built on a precarious quagmire of steep slopes and soft earth.
