MEET COLORADO'S NEWEST CONGRESSWOMEN |
|
|
| CONGRESSWOMAN BRITTANY PETTERSEN - CD7
CD7 is the community that has made her who she is
She was born in Colorado and lived in Jefferson County nearly her entire life. She came from a working-class family — her dad was a construction contractor and her mom was a hairdresser. They were a regular middle-class family, but all of that changed when her mom injured her back when she was just 6 years old. Like far too many Americans, her mom was prescribed a dangerous amount of opioids – leading to an addiction to prescription pills, alcohol, and, ultimately, heroin.
Even though Brittany faced significant challenges at home, she was one of the lucky ones. She had access to great public schools and teachers that believed in her. Because of the investments this community made in her, she was given a chance to earn a good life. Brittany became the first in her family to graduate from both high school and college, and she went on to serve in the Colorado legislature for 10 years — fighting for families like hers.
As a Colorado legislator, she passed the nation’s strongest Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, Colorado’s Red Flag law, and the Secure Savings Act. As Chair of the House Education Committee, she shepherded historic investments in our public schools and worked across the aisle to get things done for Colorado’s working families. She also took her experience fighting to save her mom’s life in a broken behavioral health system to ensure others who are struggling with a substance use disorder or a mental health issue have access to the care they need in Colorado, but her work isn’t done.
The same opportunities she had growing up have been put further and further out of reach for far too many Coloradans – and the pandemic dramatically worsened the income inequality and opportunity gaps in this country. The climate crisis is devastating Colorado communities, and dangerous conspiracy theorists are threatening the very fabric of our democracy. But that is not who we are. Colorado is a place of hope, optimism and opportunity. A place where the American Dream is still possible if we work together to give everyone a level playing field. A new chapter in America can start today, right here in our beautiful state. |

CONGRESSWOMAN YADIRA CARAVEO - CD8
Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo, M.D. represents Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, composed of most of Adams County, a large portion of Weld County, and a portion of Larimer County. Prior to her election to Congress in 2022, Rep. Caraveo served families across the North Denver metro area as a pediatrician. As one of the few Spanish speaking pediatricians in the area, Rep. Caraveo spent nearly a decade treating families and children from Denver up to Greeley.
Rep. Caraveo grew up in Adams County, raised by her parents on her father’s construction worker’s salary and surrounded by her extended family in Brighton and Fort Lupton. Rep. Caraveo’s parents’ love for learning inspired her to work hard as a student in the Adams 12 Five Star Public School system, and to become the first in her family to graduate from college. After graduating from Regis University, Rep. Caraveo became the first in her family to attend medical school, at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. In medical school, she decided she wanted to give back to her community by becoming a pediatrician. She completed her internship and residency at University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then moved back to Adams County.
As a pediatrician, Rep. Caraveo saw the struggles that families across the North Denver Metro area encounter every day — problems that she couldn’t fix as their doctor. Low wages, the high cost of housing, and expensive medication combined to make the American Dream that she and her family had achieved slip more and more out of reach for Colorado’s working families. One day, after getting off the phone with an insurance company that was delaying care for her patient, Rep. Caraveo decided she had had enough, and ran for the state legislature to make life better for the working families she saw in clinic every day.
In the state legislature, Rep. Caraveo worked across the aisle to take on special interests and advocate for the needs of Colorado families. When Colorado’s 8th Congressional District was drawn following the 2020 census, Rep. Caraveo decided to step up and run for Congress to fight for families from Commerce City to Greeley at the federal level.
As a pediatrician, Rep. Caraveo’s knowledge of the healthcare system helps her advocate for ways to lower healthcare costs and increase access to healthcare for Coloradans. As the daughter of immigrants, Rep. Caraveo knows how much work it takes to achieve the American Dream and is dedicated to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to pursue that dream.
Rep. Caraveo lives in Thornton, CO just 10 minutes away from her parents, who still live in her childhood home. She spends her free time with her mom and dad, her four siblings, and their children. |

CONGRATULATIONS TO LORENA GARCIA ON BECOMING THE NEW REPRESENTATIVE FOR HD35 |
|
|
|
A 7th generation Coloradan on her dad’s side and first generation Coloradan on her moms, Lorena Garcia’s background mirrors many families in Colorado. Her commitment to the well-being of families can be tied back to her own as the youngest of six siblings and aunt of 16 nieces and nephews and great aunt to 11. Lorena attended the University of Colorado Boulder as an undergrad before earning her MBA from George Washington University.
Lorena has been dedicated to serving individuals, families, and communities her entire life. She works tirelessly to build up the dignity of marginalized and disenfranchised communities by building strong coalitions. She has led important fights for family-sustaining economic policies, and civil rights protections for women’s reproductive independence, economic justice, and immigrant rights at the State Capitol and at the ballot box. Touching the lives of people both in Colorado and around the globe, Garcia also supported communities in Nepal and Nicaragua, helping them create self-sufficient, circular economies that allow them to thrive in their isolated areas. She currently serves as the executive director of the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition focused on closing the opportunity gaps in education for children of color. While her bid was unsuccessful, Lorena was the first Latina, and the first out member of the LGBTQ community to run for US Senate in Colorado’s history. Lorena and her wife, Jaimi, have been happily married for 11 years and live in Denver with their four dogs.
Lorena Garcia has been supporting vulnerable communities throughout Colorado by developing and executing meaningful, and effective, life-changing programs and people-centered policies. Garcia works tirelessly to build up the dignity of marginalized and disenfranchised communities by working with these communities to create and implement programs rooted in dignity and respect, and that drive confidence and success. She has drafted, lobbied for, and found bi-partisan support for numerous bills that included wage transparency, dignity for laboring inmates, and Colorado’s first form of protection for family leave and most recently eliminating the proof of lawful presence for public benefits. Touching the lives of people both in Colorado and around the globe, Garcia also supported communities in Nepal and Nicaragua, helping them create self-sufficient, circular economies that allow them to thrive in their isolated areas. Garcia currently serves as the Executive Director of the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition, where she focuses on creating a strong educational system that begins with early childhood education for all, and helps to prepare our next generations to successfully face the challenges we leave for them. She was the first, openly LGBTQ and Latina candidate to run for federal office in Colorado in 2020.
As a 7th generation Coloradan on her father’s side and first generation on her mother’s side, Garcia’s family background mirrors many families in Colorado and across the country. Her commitment to the well-being of families can be tied back to her own as the youngest of six siblings and aunt of 16 nieces and nephews. She and her wife, Jaimi, have been married for 10 years and are the proud parents of four loving dogs. Garcia has a Bachelor’s in film studies from CU Boulder and a MBA from the George Washington University.
