John,
If you’ve tuned into the news the last 24 hours, you’ve likely seen the
dysfunction happening in the U.S. House with the failure to elect someone to
serve as the next Speaker.
At the time of this email, Congressman Kevin McCarthy has appeared on the
ballot six times and failed to reach the winning threshold each time. It seems
clear at this point that he doesn’t have the votes to win and the Republican
Party needs to chart a new path forward to show the American people that it can
govern.
I posted a comment on Twitter

yesterday suggesting a new way forward and it already has more than 5 million
impressions, meaning that it is driving a lot of online discussion about this
topic. I also recently talked about this in a TV interviewthat you can watch

Throughout the day today, we have seen an increasing number of journalists
asking House members about what I proposed and I believe that it is helping
people understand that there is a better way forward.
Too many in Washington today think that even talking to someone from the
opposite party, let alone daring to work with them on something, means that
you’re losing. That is ridiculous, and we need more voices out there putting
pressure on them to change their misguided ways.
Having served in Congress for 18 years, and chairing the House Budget
Committee that worked with a Democratic president to balance our nation’s
balanced budget for the first time in decades. I truly believe that we can find
ways to have bipartisan collaboration and have some honest political give and
take on key issues that face the American people.
If there was one thing that was made clear by voters in the most recent
election, it’s that they want their elected leaders to have ideas and work
together. Those who continue to play politics and fail to offer workable policy
ideas are failing in their duty to the American people.
As you can see, my voice is out there and I’m going to keep putting pressure
on my Republican Party to end this toxic division and get to work. Any funds
that we’re able toraise online right now <[link removed]>
will help in this effort.
