John, we’re in uncharted territory. It’s been more than 24 hours since the new Congress began and not a single House member has been sworn in.
And here’s why:
Kevin McCarthy has no strongly held values or beliefs. He stands for nothing but himself. Without any core convictions, without the respect of his own Conference, he has tried and failed over and over again to be elected Speaker.
Our Democratic Caucus — more diverse, more representative, more unified — has stood strong, with every member holding the line while the Republican melodrama and infighting play out on national television.
And because McCarthy is so shameless, lacking the capacity to feel humiliated by his repeated failures, we are stuck in this process until Republicans make a deal amongst themselves.
This is supposed to be the easy part. A formality. If Republicans cannot elect a Speaker, they will not be able to even attempt to govern.
The embarrassment, debasement, and degree to which the Republican Party is showing the American people how dysfunctional they are says it all. They are not fit to lead.
If you agree that this national disgrace proves Republicans don’t deserve the House Majority, make a contribution today to help Democrats take it back in two years. Let’s not waste another moment.

Thanks — I’m looking forward to finally getting down to business once this is over.
