On December 28, 1922, women’s rights activist Alice Paul wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Times titled: “Women Will Be Real Equals in 2023.” In it, she predicts:

“It will not require one hundred years to elect a woman President of the United States. Before 2023 we will see a woman in the White House as chief executive of the nation and women will comprise half of the membership of Congress.”

This unfulfilled prophecy has been making the rounds on social media over the past few days, especially, and unfortunately, because more than 100 years later – a woman has not reached the highest office in the land, and the United States Congress is still 73% male.

Britain had their first woman prime minister in 1979, France elected their first woman president in 1991, and Canada in 1993, just to name a few.

It’s also worth mentioning that, in the 2022 midterm elections – just months after women lost basic human rights at the federal level, the percentage of women representing Americans in Congress hardly budged. In 2020, women made up 27% of the U.S. Congress. In 2023 that number will only increase by 1 percentage point.

Although we have made tremendous strides since 1922, Alice Paul’s prediction is a stark reminder of just how far we have left to go. The United States is falling behind – and the lack of representation is detrimental to our country’s progress, productivity, and success.
