John,
As we start off 2023, I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to CREW’s end of year matching campaign. Thanks to all of you, we’re beginning 2023 with the resources we need to take on Trump’s corruption, seek accountability for the insurrection, and fight for our democracy every day. We truly couldn’t do it without you.
And when I say CREW fights for our democracy every day, I mean it. We’re just days into the year, but already the incoming Republican House majority is seeking to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics. OCE is a key bipartisan office that helps investigate alleged ethics violations by members of Congress, and it has played an important role in increasing transparency and strengthening the enforcement of ethics rules. Weakening it would do serious damage to ethics in Congress.
This plan is a part of the changes to the House rules that will be passed as soon as a Speaker of the House is selected, so time is of the essence. Call your representative now at 202-224-3121 and tell them: don’t support the plan to weaken the Office of Congressional Ethics!
In 2011 and 2017, when House Republicans took power, they tried similar attacks on OCE—but public outrage got them to back down. We've stopped this before, and we can do it again.
The proposed rule changes would make it very difficult for OCE to get all the staff it needs to operate—even making it difficult for them to hire new staff when others depart. That’s unacceptable.
Call your member of Congress now at 202-224-3121 and let them know: say no to gutting the Office of Congressional Ethics.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
