Perhaps the most important election of the year is less than six weeks away. In Wisconsin--one of the two or three closest swing states in the country--there will be a primary for Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Why is this so important? Let us count the ways: Right now Wisconsin has a 4-3 right-wing Court majority. This allowed voter suppression efforts to remain in place in 2022, including a ban on absentee-ballot drop boxes and closing polling places in disproportionately minority neighborhoods. Additionally, it protected the most absurd gerrymander in the country. Democratic Governor Tony Evers won his race 51-48%. Yet, Republicans won a two thirds supermajority in the WI senate and missed one in the WI assembly by one vote.

Thankfully, one of the right wing hack judges is leaving the court. This will lead to an open primary February 18th, with the top-two vote getters running in the general election in April. We must elect a Democrat, and in an ideal world we'd elect both Democrats in the primary, ensuring the eventual general election winner--and a new Wisconsin Supreme Court majority--is progressive and respects democracy.

With the betrayal of Roe. Wade by a stolen majority of religious zealots on the U.S. Supreme Court, Wisconsin's Court will decide if an 1849 state law banning abortion is constitutional. There's no mystery here--if Republicans win they'll have a 4-3 majority to ban abortion in virtually all cases, including rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Therefore, we must fund both progressive candidates, Dane County Judge Everett Mitchell & Milwaukee County Judge Janet Protasiewicz. Even more so as reporting has been done showing the secretive authoritarian Federalist Society--the same group of goons that saddled SCOTUS with the likes of Thomas, Alito, Kavanaugh and the rest--started dropping large amounts of cash into state court races. Sadly, it allowed them to take back both Ohio and North Carolina courts this past election cycle, and we have not yet begun to see the damage this will do.

We cannot lose this race in Wisconsin. It'll even have presidential implications, with WI being a key state we must win in 2024 to hold the White House. In other words, to stop a cruel, corrupt and incompetent Trump, DeSantis, Ted Cruz type from being handed the state with voter suppression or other election thievery.
