John,
Yesterday, my staff, my family, and I gathered on Capitol Hill for what was supposed to be my swearing-in ceremony. I know many of you waited eagerly for the livestream to get to the good part.
Instead, what we got was chaos and calamity.
MAGA Republicans spent the afternoon fighting over who should lead their party. Ultimately, they rejected Kevin McCarthy as their Speaker in three different floor votes. This is the first time in 100 years that a Speaker election required more than one floor vote. Members can’t be sworn in or begin working on legislation until the GOP agrees on a Speaker – something they have had months and months and months to decide on. Something else I learned is that our staff cannot be paid, access their emails, or get their badges until we are all sworn in. The GOP is quite literally making governing impossible.
If the GOP can’t even agree on who should be their next Speaker, how can they effectively govern for the American people? I’m taking yesterday as a sign that we need to show voters that Democrats are united – and start building a nationwide movement to take back the House in 2024. Can you pitch in a donation of any amount to help us capitalize on this moment and build momentum towards a Democratic majority in 2024?
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
With more extreme members of the Republican Party already wielding the power to shut down government processes and stall work, we should all be concerned. If yesterday was any indication of what’s to come, then we have our work cut out for us – and all of us need to roll up our sleeves and get working towards securing a Democratic Congress in 2024.
More soon. Thanks for sticking with me!
