Republicans are now in control of the United States House of Representatives.
(Though, as I write this, things seem to be out of control in terms of who the next Speaker of the House will be.)
And what are they poised to do first?
Gut the Office of Congressional Ethics.
That’s right — once they sort out their own internal squabbles about just how much of a far-right reactionary they want as Speaker of the House — Republicans are expected to immediately force a vote that could render Congress’ own ethics watchdog essentially powerless.
- The Office of Congressional Ethics is the body that would investigate incoming Rep. George Santos, who seems to have fabricated vast portions of his own history.
- The Office of Congressional Ethics would also investigate members of Congress for their roles in the January 6 insurrection.
- Republicans tried to kill the Office of Congressional Ethics in 2017, but Donald Trump made them abandon that scheme.
- I repeat: Eliminating the Office of Congressional Ethics was too unethical even for Donald Trump, yet Republicans are about to try it again!
Public Citizen is sounding the alarm.
A question for every Republican in Congress:
If you vote to essentially neuter the Office of Congressional Ethics, you’re pretty much telling the American people that you intend to do some pretty unethical things. Are you sure that’s the message you want to send with one of your very first votes in this new term?
