Dear friend,
My name is Andrea. Though my title is Director of Member Services, my main job at FAMM is to help families.
It wasn't too long ago that I needed help myself. In 1991, my brother, a first-time marijuana offender, was ordered to serve the rest of his life in prison, thanks to a one-size-fits-all, mandatory minimum sentencing law. My family was devastated and confused.
I reached out to FAMM for support and guidance — and I got it. I learned that there were lots of families struggling with the same challenges my family was, and that our criminal justice system needed serious reform. Finally, I learned that those of us who had been affected by the system firsthand had to step up and become part of the solution. So I joined FAMM.
I've worked for FAMM for decades now, and I share my experience, strength, and hope with family members who call our office. I share things like what to expect on prison visiting days and to how to get in touch with federal and state lawmakers. After feeling so helpless about my brother's situation, it feels good to help others.
