Hi Friend, Rep. Kevin McCarthy just failed in his initial bid to be elected Speaker of the House. For the first time in 100 years, a speaker nominee failed to get the majority needed to be elected on the first ballot. Now, the House has descended into chaos. This once-in-a-century problem may require a once-in-a-century solution. It isn’t clear if McCarthy or any other speaker nominee can get a majority with only Republican votes. What is clear is that a small, far-right faction in the House is trying to dominate the speaker election process and dictate what kind of Congress we will have for the next two years. We don’t need to sit around and just accept this outcome. Nothing in the Constitution dictates that a House speaker need only be elected with votes from his or her own party. In fact, the speaker doesn’t even need to be a sitting member of the U.S. House of Representatives. So here’s our critical question for you: Should No Labels come out publicly in support of a speaker candidate? |
