Happy New Year, folks! I’ve got a quick favor to ask.
After 19 years of dedicated service to her constituents, caucus and country, Nancy Pelosi stepped down as the leader of the House Democratic Caucus today.
As she passes the torch to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and the next generation of Blue leadership, I’m reflecting on her legacy – as not only the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, but also the first woman to ever lead a major political party in the U.S. Congress.
But leaving it there would be a disservice to her 18-term congressional career. Since 1987, Nancy has served both California’s 12th District and Democratic voters nationwide with unparalleled strength, compassion and poise.
Her ongoing career spans landmark legislation, seven presidents, financial collapse, war, impeachments and multiple threats to her physical safety.
And in January 2021, in the face of a deadly right-wing mob threatening the certification of an election and Congress itself, she stood her ground – going above and beyond to stop the violence and protect our democracy from Trump’s attempted coup.
In short, her mark on 20th- and 21st-century American politics will not be soon forgotten.
That’s why – before the end of the day – I want to give her a small token of my immense gratitude. And I’m hoping you’ll join me by clicking here to add your name to the card I’m giving Nancy to thank her for her unwavering dedication to our democracy as the Speaker of the House.
