Hey John,
As a youth centered convergence, we’re excited to have Wawa Gatheru, a Kenyan-American youth environmental justice scholar-activist to be another headliner at Power Shift 2023! Wawa founded and is the Executive Director of Black Girl Environmentalist (a PSN Network Member btw!) and is the youngest council member at EarthJustice along with other accolades.

Wawa is a leader in making the climate movement center those most directly affected by the climate crisis, especially Black girls, Black women, and Black non-binary people. As the daughter of Kenyan immigrants, she grew up with a deep connection to the land. But it wasn’t until later that she identified as an environmentalist because most mainstream representations of environmentalism did not represent people that looked like her.
As a Black-led climate justice organization, Power Shift Network recognizes racial justice and climate justice as being intertwined fights and we work towards supporting BIPOC folks first and foremost. We’re excited for that work to continue at the convergence with the goal of having most attendees being BIPOC youth.
Now that you know some of the keynote speakers of PS23, we’re hype to share more programming coming down the pipeline, including sessions around healing justice.
