Dear  John,

British historian Christopher Dawson is best known for his indispensable books that establish the necessary connection between religion and culture. He influenced a generation of Christian and conservative thinkers, including T. S. Eliot and Russell Kirk. He possessed one of the 20th century's sharpest minds and was the first Catholic Studies professor at Harvard University. A critic of modern ideological and totalitarian politics, he identified the threat posed by political religions to Christian civilization. He grasped the sources of decadence in modern education and proposed remedies. In general, he sought resources in the religious foundations of our culture to renew it in our time.

Christopher Dawson is somewhat forgotten now, although he deserves to be remembered. An exciting new book may change that. Please join the editors of The University Bookman on January 10, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. EST for our next Book Gallery as we discuss Dawson's legacy with Joseph T. Stuart, whose new book Christopher Dawson: A Cultural Mind in the Age of the Great War examines Dawson’s thought, insights, and ongoing relevance. Christopher Dawson is a conservative mind you need to know. Join us for this conversation and find out why!

Joseph Stuart first began researching and writing on this topic during his time as a Wilbur Fellow at the Kirk Center. Dr. Stuart is now Associate Professor of History and Fellow in Catholic Studies at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota.

We do hope you'll make plans to join us online on January 10, and that you'll help spread the word among friends and family who share your interest in the permanent things. Thank you for your partnership in our shared work of cultural renewal, and many happy returns in the new year!

Sincerely,

Jeffrey O. Nelson, Ph.D.
