Forest Carbon: What You Were Afraid to Ask
Forest carbon is in the news, and it?s clear that carbon from forests will be something that the forest industry and forest landowners will grapple with in the coming years.? Across the region, there have been some landowner-based forest carbon projects, where forest landowners receive compensation for sequestering and storing carbon.? We?ve seen multiple public policy efforts count forest carbon toward state goals.? As the importance of forest carbon grows, the forest industry will be asking questions, seeking opportunities, and engaging in public policy. ?
Join us to hear Charles Levesque of Innovative Natural Resource Solutions LLC ? and coordinator for the North East State Foresters Association?s Securing Northeast Forest Carbon Program ? discuss the basics of forest carbon, and discuss what it might mean in future years for the industry:
- How do forests capture and store carbon, and what is the impact of forests on the global carbon cycle?
- How does the forest carbon market work, and what are the current options for landowners in this space?
- How might forest carbon programs impact timber harvesting in the future, and what might this mean for mills, loggers, and others?
- Are there opportunities for carbon markets to recognize forest products as stored carbon, and what might this mean for markets in the future??
Of course, some of these questions don?t (yet) have answers, but we?ll discuss what we know, what we don?t know, and what the forest industry supply chain should be aware of.? If you have questions about or experience with forest carbon programs, this is an opportunity to learn more and/or share your knowledge.
