MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MONDAY E'NEWS Legislative Issues: Storage Mandates With the new year, both the Michigan Legislature and the state's entire Executive Branch are now controlled by opponents of armed self-defense rights. It's likely we will see attempts to pass gun control legislation soon. The Michigan Legislature is expected to begin taking up policy items in committees by late February and early March. Shortly after the November election, MCRGO began to meet with allied gun groups to discuss strategy for the upcoming legislative session. One result of those meetings has been the creation of discussion points for educational purposes -not only directed at legislators, but also the general public, and fellow gun owners. Along with Attorney General Nessel's pledge to ban all forms of defensive carry inside the State Capitol, Governor Whitmer has listed three early firearms goals. They are: storage mandates, extreme risk protection orders, and long gun registration. We will cover these issues over the coming weeks beginning with this week's issue of the E'News. When discussing policy, it's helpful to avoid angry "Shall not be infringed!" type arguments and focus instead on the practical implications of gun control laws on crime and public safety. Use these discussion points to craft communication with your elected officials and social media posts in your own words. Your personal statements will have deeper impact than copied and pasted form content. This link will help you contact your Michigan legislators. Why MCRGO Opposes Storage Mandates... Storage mandates force people to chose between their safety and and their already stressed pocketbook. Storage mandates can hinder people's ability to protect their home and family by preventing fast access to a firearm in the event of a home invasion. How would storage mandates be enforced to be effective? Are police going to come in people's homes to check for statutorily approved storage methods? Or are these laws only going to be enforced after a negligent shooting in which case no harm was prevented? These laws are not going to affect the people we want to affect. The type of people who allow easy access to a firearm by a child are not going to follow a new law anyway. There are already laws on the books for gross negligence and child endangerment. More background on storage mandates from Dr. John Lott can be found HERE.
