Hello,
One of the biggest questions I am asked is how to set goals.
With the new year being a time of introspection for goal setting, here are 3 principles that are neglected:
1. Have a clear goal - We need to know where we are going. What are we doing and why? It turns out that the way that we are constructed neurophysiologically is that we do not experience any positive emotion unless we have an aim.
2. Avoid unethical goals - The nobler the goal, the better your life. If you do not have a noble goal, then you have nothing but shallow, trivial pleasures, and they do not sustain you because life is so difficult. It is so much suffering, it ends and everyone dies, and it is painful. Without a noble goal, how can you withstand any of that?
3. Enjoy the pursuit - It is not attaining the aim that makes us happy. As soon as the game ends, you have to come up with another game. Attainment of the goal can not be the thing that drives you because it collapses the game. So when you graduate from university, you are the king of the mountain for one day and then you are the serf at that Starbucks for the next five years. Human beings are more activated by moving towards a goal than by attaining the goal.
