It's hard to believe that 2022 is behind us. While it was an extremely challenging year for the Jewish community, we are comforted by developments in the fight against antisemitism — including anti-Zionism — in Canada and across the globe, some of which were highlighted in last week's Word from our Chair and by the World Jewish Congress. 



As the advocacy agent for Jewish Federations across Canada, CIJA thanks for your ongoing support that helps us realize our mission to protect and preserve Jewish life here at home. It is our privilege to work on your behalf to create a safer world for all members of our Jewish community.

During the last 12 months, as the world began to recover from a pandemic that dramatically impacted all our lives and the people of Ukraine were unconscionably and viciously attacked by Russia, the Jewish community experienced a disturbing surge in antisemitic hate at a level not seen in more than 75 years.



Anti-Jewish speech and action, inextricably intertwined with anti-Israel and anti-Zionist rhetoric, grew exponentially in social media, in public discourse, and on Canadian campuses until it felt like a constant barrage of one horrific incident after another, increasingly frequent, and each more incendiary than the last.



But we also saw some reason for hope!...

While Jews continued to be attacked, their synagogues vandalized, and their history and culture, especially related to the Holocaust, distorted, there was progress in the fight against Jew hatred.



Positive trends included the adoption by the Council of the European Union of measures to combat racism and antisemitism; the appointment by of antisemitism envoys and the IHRA definition of antisemitism by several countries; and strides at the United Nations in the fight against antisemitism.
