Dear friend,

In Ukraine, this is a December like no other.

An estimated 50% of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has been severely damaged as a result of continued attacks. Frigid temperatures combined with nationwide power outages mean that basic needs like heat, lights, refrigeration, and running water are simply unavailable — to millions of people whose lives are already upended by the war.

Mercy Corps team members and partners continue to deliver aid, even as many of our staff and their families are themselves affected by electricity and water outages.
Amid ongoing electricity outages, Mercy Corps’ partner organization team members process new participants’ registrations by candlelight.
Right now, it’s estimated that 17.7 million people need humanitarian assistance. This continues to be the fastest growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. With more than 7.8 million Ukrainians having left the country as refugees and at least 7 million internally displaced, one-third of the country’s population remains displaced a full ten months after the conflict began.

By the end of 2022, Mercy Corps and our partners will bring humanitarian aid to more than 100,000 Ukrainians and other people in the region affected by the war. We’re providing temporary shelter, delivering food and household items to those unable to travel, and providing the resources people need in order to make informed decisions about their next steps. And during these winter months, we’re ensuring refugees have critical cold-weather necessities.

In October, I met Evenhii and Anna Kadygrob who have been living in a temporary apartment with their two sons since the mayor of their hometown ordered them to evacuate. They are now receiving emergency cash assistance from Mercy Corps, which they are using to pay for rent and winter clothing.

Your tax-deductible, matching gift today — during this season of warmth and generosity — will help us go 2x as far providing lifesaving support in places like Ukraine, and in other communities facing crisis around the world.
